Some people eat dog meat. When you see them, you might feel angry and want to kill them, but yet you go home and enjoy a nice beef steak. What I just told you now is Selective empathy in action. You feel love for a dog but you don’t for the cow now don’t get me wrong eating any animal including dogs is horrible. Let me give another example. A slaughterhouse kills 10 or 12 animals raised for meat then he goes home to play with his dog. Even this is selective empathy in action! We, humans, care about some animals but for others we kill. This is an urgent problem that needs to be fixed. Here the best solution is to become a vegetarian. All animals deserve love and care. But not all of them get it. This is unfair. We need to change this. Another thing is not only with animals but also with saving the environment. Take global warming as an example, things like electricity and driving cars get a lot of attention but other factors cause global warming too like meat and the construction of buildings. This is also selective empathy in action. We need to stop selective empathy.

Here are some things we can do to stop selective empathy from harming the environment and animals:

1.      Become a vegetarian and stop eating animals at all.

2.      If you’re a person who wants to solve an environmental problem, consider all the factors and solve each of them.

In short, to stop selective empathy we need to take care of all animals, and when solving an environmental issue take into consideration all the factors that cause and solve each of them one by one. If we do all these things slowly but surely, we will be fully able to eradicate selective empathy.
