Forest fires are dangerous and they can kill lots of animals. When a blaze ripped through Okanogan it destroyed a lot of Okanogan’s nature. A few years later an even larger inferno ripped through Okanogan, it was the size of Connecticut! This forced the US forest service right into action and forged its aggressive policy not only to stop wildfires but to smother any that did start. And this has been working. The number of areas burned has decreased a lot. But there is a problem. With no forest fires, the forests became more flammable with conifer trees also becoming full of dead or dying trees. These fires have become more aggressive even though the US forest service is still trying to put out fires. The amount of area burned has more than doubled. We need to let some fires burn or even start them ourselves. For example, when a blaze ripped through Pechanga unmanaged forests lost 95 percent of their trees but forests that have been dosed with controlled burning and some logging, these forests lost 43 percent of their trees. And sure, the US forest service can do the same but it heavily depends on Congress for its money and Congress only cares about emergency measures and not preventive ones sadly. So not many forests receive their recommended dosage of cutting and controlled burning. It’s time for Congress to take preventive measures and save more animals than taking emergency ones and save less of them.
