Lions are one of the very strong and big cat species. They are very big.  Cheetahs and African wild dogs aren’t so strong or too big. So, lions kill them. You might think that the lions are just hunting. But, it’s much more complicated than that. Why do lions kill cheetahs and African wild dogs?

African wild dogs and cheetahs are not on the menu of lions. You might think that if lions don’t like cheetah and African wild dog meat, why do lions hunt them?  They hunt them because of the lack of food. Since there is limited food in an area lions have to kill African wild dogs and cheetahs. So, one of the best tactics lions use to kill cheetahs is by killing their cubs. When the mother cheetah goes hunting if her cubs don’t hide in tall grass, they can become food for anyone not only lions. Both adult cheetahs and cheetah cubs are vulnerable to many predators. Cheetahs are critically endangered so they need to be protected from lions, poachers, and other predators until the cheetah population goes back to normal. If we do not protect cheetahs, then they will go extinct. If cheetahs go extinct, then animals that rely on cheetahs for food will die. The deer population will explode as there will be no cheetahs to hunt them down. Then, the deer will eat a lot of the plants and there will be no food for them in the future. Then, they will go extinct, predatory animals won’t get any food and they will go extinct. In short, if cheetahs die many other animals will perish too. This is why we must protect cheetahs and African wild dogs from extinction.
